Facial Acupuncture

I have been getting acupuncture for roughly 13 years.  I started getting acupuncture and body gua sha due to lingering pain from a car accident.  It helped what physical therapy couldn't.  Over the years I have wanted to try facial acupuncture but had kept putting it off.  After my 1st treatment I am a little upset I have waited as long as I did to try it out.

I went to Anisa at Dharma Health Institute in Playa Del Rey.  Anisa was introduced to me by my cousin, who also goes to her.  Prior to getting the acupuncture Anisa went over my health history and concerns.  I told her I was getting more concerned about the fine lines I am starting to see on my forehead.  After reviewing my health history she told me I am more than likely yin deficient.  I told her she was spot on, this aligned with what my other acupuncturist had told me after looking at my tongue.   The fine lines I am concerned about on my forehead are due to yin deficiency, we discussed ways to help support and balance my yin and yang energy.

In TCM (Tradition Chinese Medicine) practitioners not only review your health history but they will look at your tongue and take your pulse.  Before your appointment your practitioner will remind you not to scrap your tongue to get an accurate reading.   They are looking at the shape, color, and coating on your tongue.

What is facial acupuncture?

During acupuncture treatments, tiny needles are gently placed along specific “acupressure points” where they interact with underlying tissue including ligaments, muscles, and nerves. This process stimulates the body’s own healing response, thus relieving pain, releasing tension, and helping to neutralize emotional imbalances.

What are the benefits of facial acupuncture?

  • Stimulate collagen production (reducing lines and wrinkles along with reducing skin sagging)
  • Brightens Complexion
  • Improves skin texture and tone
  • Minimizes the appearance of pores
  • Reduces Acne
  • Reduces puffiness and swelling in face
  • Reduces jaw tension

What can you expect during your facial acupuncture and full body treatment ?

You will want to show up to your facial wearing comfortable clothing, no jewelry, and with cleansed skin.  The first 45 minutes of the facial Anisa will treat the underlying constitutional areas that she gains from her intake as well as the face to provide that inner glow experience. By balancing the meridian system, we are restoring homeostasis in the body and restoring the body's natural qi flow. This translates into glowing skin and a youthful presence.  This is done using  acupuncture needles.  You will then rest and listen to calming music for roughly 30 minutes.  Anisa will come back to remove the needles and apply a healing spray and nourishing oil.  I do recommend bringing a sun visor to wear to and from your appointment to protect your skin from UV rays.

How many treatments do you need to see results?

Anisa recommends coming once a week for 10-12 weeks and then once a month for maintenance after the initial treatments.

Can you enhance your lip shape and size?

Ultimately you are stimulating collagen production so it is possible.  Anisa did state that our lips are associated with our digestion.  If you have poor digestion this could have an effect on the results you see.  I would highly advise working on your digestion beforehand.  Also keep in mind that if you were to receive filler, filler does not last forever this is potentially a more natural alternative.

Can you receive facial acupuncture if you have had fillers or botox?

It is recommended to wait 6 months.

What are the contraindication for facial acupuncture?

  • Severe high blood pressure
  • Severe migraines
  • Diabetes
  • Currently going through chemotherapy or radiation
  • Pregnancy

Can I receive a facial before or after getting facial acupuncture?

There is no downtime.  You can receive a facial before or after receiving facial acupuncture.  You will want to avoid receiving microdermabrasion 3 weeks prior  to receiving facial acupuncture.

Does facial acupuncture hurt?

You should feel comfortable throughout a facial acupuncture treatment session and should not be in pain. If you do experience any discomfort, let Anisa know so that she an make adjustments.

Before / After 1 Facial Acupuncture Treatment

From one treatment my jawline and cheeks looks more sculpted.  The lines on my forehead look less visible, and my face overall looks more relaxed.

Would I do this treatment again?
