• Skin Stories: Mask(NE) and a Beauty Queen

Kennedy started coming back in recently and we went through her current skincare routine.  I noticed she was using a lot of acne products that had many drying ingredients in them.  Many times with acne kits they focus on drying out the acne, this sounds like a great plan, however, this can dehydrate the skin.  When the skin is dehydrated it starts producing more oil tit's the skin's way to try and compensate for a lack of moisture.  This will usually cause more breakouts, so it becomes a vicious cycle.  Instead of starting her on a whole new program, we complimented her existing program with products that would help balance her skin and add hydration to her skin.  After a couple of weeks, her skin is clearing up and is more balanced!  She has been consistent with her home care and we have set her up on a facial program to get her skin GLOWING for competing in Miss Indiana USA!

That is right this beauty is representing our hometown in Miss Indiana USA!  We joked recently about how I use to change her diapers when she was a baby and now I am giving her facials.  I have watched this beauty grow up over the years and now she is all grown up and she is KILLING IT!  She has beauty, brains, with a heart of GOLD!
  • Facial Acupuncture

What are the benefits of facial acupuncture?

    • Stimulate collagen production (reducing lines and wrinkles along with reducing skin sagging)
    • Brightens Complexion
    • improved skin texture and tone
    • Minimizes the appearance of pores
    • Reduces Acne
    • Reduces puffiness and swelling in face
    • Reduces jaw tension

What can you expect during your facial acupuncture facial?

You will want to show up to your facial wearing comfortable clothing, no jewelry, and with cleansed skin.  The first 45 minutes of the facial Anisa will place thin needles around the face and treat specific areas with intradermal needles.  You will then rest and listen to calming music for roughly 30 minutes.  Anisa will come back to remove the needles and apply a healing spray and nourishing oil.  I do recommend bringing a sun visor to wear to and from your appointment to protect your skin from UV rays.

  • Melasma and Birth Control

Melasma often referred to as the “pregnancy mask” can also be caused by your birth control. Melasma occurs when melanocytes (the cells responsible for creating pigment in your skin) are stimulated into over-producing melanin, dark spots.  This also happens from overexposure to UV rays.  Melanocytes are also stimulated by the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone. When you're taking the pill, those hormone levels can change, and this could result in hyperpigmentation/dark spots.
  • How often should I get a professional facial?!

Professional facials are recommended every 4 weeks.  This does depend on your skincare concerns and goals.

    1. Deeper exfoliation. When your skin has had a deeper exfoliation it allows products to penetrate deeper and improves skins ability to retain hydration.

    2. Youthful glow. As we mature our skins cell turnover slows down. This can cause your skin to look dull, you may notice fine lines. During a facial we will help slough off dead skin and create a youthful glow.

  • Vitamin C

What benefits does Vitamin C offer your skin?
Oh you know it just helps promotes a youthful GLOW!

Fights free radical damage: Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant.  Anti-oxidants help fight free radical damage from our environment like; smog, cigarette smoke, poor diet, dust, and pollution.

Stimulates collagen production: Vitamin C is ESSENTIAL for collagen production. "Vitamin C is the essential cofactor for the two enzymes required for collagen synthesisprolyl hydroxylase (to stabilize the collagen molecule) and lysyl hydroxylase (to give structural strength cross-linking)."

Lightens Hyperpigmentation:  It also inhibits melanin production in the skin, which helps to lighten hyperpigmentation and brown spots, even out skin tone, promoting a youthful glow!

  • How to care for your skin after a facial?

    1. Avoid wearing heavy makeup after your facial.  Your skin has just been deeply cleansed and wants to breathe, allow it to breathe and avoid potentially clogging your pores.
    2. Keep your home care routine simple for at least 3 days after your facial.  By simple I mean: Cleanse with a gentle cleanser using lukewarm water, mist your skin with hydrating essence or mist that is alcohol and fragrance-free (Rosewater or Soothing Hydration are my go tos), moisturize, and protect with SPF!
